The New York City metro region contains vast resources of cultural and historical treasures.  Not only do areas such as the New York Botanical Gardens or the Cloisters offer cultural resources but also geological wonders.  Now, Geology of the NYC Metro Region offers more than 75 field sites that explore this rich physical environment.  All of the sites are within a 2-hour radius of NYC and many include beaches, waterfalls, gorges and mountain vistas.  All can be walked or hiked during a day or weekend trip.

This comprehensive guide provides basic information on the natural history and geologic features of the greater NYC metro area.  Over 200 color illustrations (including 70 thematic maps) make this an invaluable resource for exploring the physical environment.  Beginning with a basic chapter on geology, the authors provide practical information without the scientific jargon that often thwarts readers.  Each chapter provides an overview of geologic history as well as the physical characteristics of the landscape.  All sites described are based on accessibility and geologic significance.  For example, a walk through Central Park will reveal rocks that date from over 400 million years ago.

No other single publication contains the details of the specific sites described in Geology of NYC Metro Region.  Whether you are interested in geology or just looking for a rewarding way to spend your day, this is the perfect guide for exploring the classic geology of the New York City metro region.

Paula Messina began exploring the New York region over 20 years ago.  Her husband Phil joined her exploration in 1988.  Combining diverse backgrounds, they provide a unique look at the diversity of the NYC metro area.

Paula Messina and Phil Ward Stoffer both received their Ph.D's in Earth and Environmental Sciences from CUNY.  While teaching in New York, Paula received numerous awards for Outstanding Teacher of Earth and Environmental Sciences.  Today, she teaches at San Jose State University.  Phil is the IA Librarian for the US Geological Survey Library in Menlo Park.
