Geology of the Lake Superior Region covers just about everything you might want to know about one of the most interesting geological areas in North America: Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Full of examples, photographs, maps and diagrams, Geology of the Lake Superior Region integrates a discussion of basic physical geology into a chronological view of the geological processes that formed the Upper Midwest around Lake Superior.

In clear, concise, jargon-free prose, Gene LaBerge has written the most accurate, complete and current book on the geology and landforms of the Upper Midwest.

The geologic history of the Lake Superior region, beginning about 3.5 billion years ago, is indeed fascination, and LaBerge's enthusiastic telling of this geologic story makes Geology of the Lake Superior Region a most useful book.

"Geology of the Lake Superior Region covers just about everything anyone might want to know about one of the most interesting geological areas in North America which includes Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. Filled with examples, photographs, maps, and diagrams, Geology of the Lake Superior Region integrates a discussion of basic physical geology into a chronological view of the geological processes that formed the Upper Midwest around Lake Superior. "This well-written book is illustrated with 200 photos, maps, and diagrams. While aimed at a general audience, it would be a useful addition to the library of every person, amateur or professional, who is interested in the geology of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. LaBerge, a general geologist with decades of experience studying the Precambrian rocks of the region, has tied together the geology and geologic history of these three states." - Geotimes.

"The Lake Superior region is one of the most interesting geological areas in North America. It contains some of the oldest rocks on the continent, has a geologic history spanning the greater part of geologic time, and is considered to be one of the classic geologic areas in the world. The citizens of the three states comprising the region, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, as well as tourist to the area and students of geology, have a lasting fascination with the geology, land forms, and lakes as well as with the vast mineral resources of this geologically rich and scenic region. As a result, there is a continuing demand for well-produced books that describe these features.... This new volume by Gene L. LaBerge deals with the entire Lake Superior region and is a welcome addition to the several excellent earlier books on the general geology of this area. It is an up-to-date interpretation of the geology that follows on the heels of two decades of intensive study of the oldest rocks in the region, the Precambrian, by Federal and State Geological Surveys and personnel in several universities. The author played a significant role in these studies.
The text is written in a clear, understandable style that is easy to read... The book will be of interest to beginning students in the physical sciences and those involved in solving environmental problems, as well as citizens of the region and tourists." - Economic Geology, Vol. 90, no. 1, 1995

Finally, a book that grabbed my mind and imagination and wouldn't let go is Geology of the Lake Superior Region, by Gene LaBerge... It helped me understand and see the area around Lake Superior differently, more clearly, and made it more precious to me than it was before. A pleasure from first to last." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

"The complex geology of the Lake Superior region is one of the most interesting in the United States to mineral and gemstone collectors since it encompasses such treasured specimens as Lake Superior agates, thomsonites, kona dolomite, jaspilite, chlorastrolite, gold, native copper and silver, and many more. Geology of the Lake Superior Region documents the many changes that have caused the scenic area to evolve into the bonanza of collectibles and the incomparable freshwater lake that it is today.
The areas surrounding Lake Superior constitute significant portions of the upper Midwest, specifically Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Prominent in the distant past of the region were volcanic islands in ancient seas which produced faults, the sedimentary layers of receding tropical seas, and the glaciers which revisited the area for thousands of years....
Those who are unfamiliar with the impressive geology of the Lake Superior region and the mineral heritage it produced will be amazed, and those who have visited the region for its beauty and its specimens will be inspired to go there again and again, armed with the knowledge of how it came to be. For natives of this great segment of our nation, this book is a "must read." Although a concise and accurate scientific book, Geology of the Lake Superior Region is written in a style which should encourage a wide readership." - Lapidary Journal

Gene L. LaBerge, Ph.D is a professor with the Department of Geology at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, and has spent a great deal of time wandering through the woods and farmlands of the Upper Midwest talking to people about geological processes that shaped the world. He also has extensive experience mapping Precambrian rock for private corporations and both state and federal geological surveys.
