Way out in the desert having fun in the sun
lived a mother horned toad and her little toady one.
"Scurry!" said the mother. "I scurry!" said the one,
so they scurried all morning having fun in the sun.

Thus begins this lively counting song set to the traditional tune "Over in the Meadow." Youngsters will learn much more than how to count from one to ten as they follow desert-dwelling mothers and their offspring going about the day.

Through radiant artwork, children are introduced to an array of creatures—from hummingbirds and roadrunners to Gila monsters and coyotes—in their natural habitat, the Sonoran Desert. Biologically correct in the number of offspring that each animal can produce, we follow the animals as they go about their day from sunrise to sunset. And, for an added bonus, the number of offspring are hidden within the illustrations, challenging young readers with a unique and fun-filled learning experience.

Way Out in the Desert has also been adapted into a perfect read and sing along board book for children ages 1-5. The text’s rhyming repetition reinforces emerging reading skills and teaches young children to count.
