In an instant, the skunk's tail arched, and Carlos was sprayed from head to toe. With a gasp, Carlos fell backward onto the ground. He was so stunned he hardly realized what had happened. He had never smelled such a strong odor. His eyes itched. He coughed and snorted and blew his nose. He did his best not to cry in front of Gloria. In Carlos and the Squash Plant and Carlos and the Cornfield, Carlos got into some difficult, though hilarious, situations and learned some valuable lessons. Carlos still has much to learn, and things are getting complicated. He's known Gloria all his life, but suddenly he feels like showing off for her. Catching a skunk seems like a good way to do that, and he's pretty sure he knows how. "If you pick a skunk up by its tail, it can't spray you," Carlos once heard someone say. "You can't believe everything you hear," Gloria warns Carlos, but this only makes him more determined. Carlos, as well as the entire congregation of his church, won't soon forget this stinky lesson. Jan Romero Stevens and is also the author of Twelve Lizards Leaping: A New Twelve Days of Christmas, Carlos and the Carnival, Carlos and the Squash Plant, Carlos and the Cornfield, and Carlos Digs to China. Jeanne Arnold lives in Salt Lake City, UT and is also the illustrator of Carlos and the Carnival, Carlos and the Squash Plant, Carlos and the Cornfield, and Carlos Digs to China. |
